Synopsis

Shane's Fellowship was designed to garner a qualitative review of the state of western furniture repair and conservation, dive deep into the skills and practices involved, and return with an understanding of what can be done in Australia to train furniture workers, encourage a culture and market of repair, and raise the profile of furniture and wooden object maintenance on all levels. Shane's applied research Fellowship was also designed around the traditional journeyman years of craftspeople in France and Germany. Going back to medieval times, aspiring master craftspeople, upon completing an apprenticeship, would travel and work in different workshops for short periods of time to learn different approaches and to share their skills abroad.
