Synopsis
The aged care sector in Australia is at a critical juncture, where the need for reform and improvement is widely recognised. As the population ages, it's vital that aged care services go beyond meeting basic needs, focusing on enhancing residents' quality of life. This calls for a shift towards person-centred care, greater recognition of recreational therapy and allied health staff and a stronger focus on innovative practices, community engagement and purposeful living.
This Fellowship explored areas where Australia can improve its residential aged care sector, including adopting small-scale domestic models, integrating interdisciplinary teams and creating enabling environments. The recommendations arising from this Fellowship include actionable steps that could lead to tangible improvements in the quality of care provided to older Australians.
