Synopsis

Ella Saddington’s Fellowship report explores the revival of Western European plate steel armour craftsmanship for modern design. Supported by the George Alexander Foundation, she travelled through the UK, Denmark, and Italy, studying armour-making techniques from the 12th to 16th centuries. Her goal was to integrate these traditional methods into contemporary collectible design and functional art. By engaging with experts and examining historical artefacts, Ella demonstrated how ancient craftsmanship can enhance modern creative practices. This work bridges historical and contemporary design, promising significant contributions to the arts and design sectors.
