Synopsis

This research project examines successful arts education programs for prisoners and impacted communities in the USA. The fellow visited in-prison programs as well as speaking to post-release artists and related community art programs. There is a growing awareness in America of the role that the arts can play in bringing about personal, social, political and economic change for those affected by the age of mass incarceration. This project seeks to bring this awareness to the Victorian justice system where the arts are unjustifiably undervalued.
