Synopsis

Community-led seed saving is an important part of sustaining our local food systems, environmental resilience, and social inclusion. However, modern Australia lacks a strong community practice and knowledge of seed saving, contributing to a fragile food system heavily reliant on imported seeds from large retailers. To address this, a research Fellow explored UK models of community seed-saving initiatives to assess their potential benefits for Australia. The Fellow discovered that successful projects often stem from themes of care, kinship, and intergenerational seed stories, customs, and techniques. The goal is to apply these practices across South Australia, with a focus on community education and participation to strengthen connections between people and place.
