Synopsis

Joshua Searle’s Mason Family Trust Fellowship report documents a research journey through Colombia investigating Indigenous goldsmithing and ceramic sculptural practices. Visiting major museums, archaeological sites, and artisans, Searle examined thousands of Pre-Columbian objects, focusing on their cultural significance, craftsmanship, and symbolism. The study provided a personal and professional exploration of diasporic identity, as Searle reconnected with his Colombian heritage. The findings contribute to a broader understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems, decolonising museum practice, and the value of artistic research. This work will inform future exhibitions and creative projects, deepening engagement with cultural heritage across the arts and museum sectors in Australia.
