Synopsis
This report investigates the potential of knitted upholstery textiles within Australian design and manufacturing contexts, supported by international research into technical knit development, material performance, and specialist production systems. Through visits to leading mills, suppliers, studios, and industry practitioners, the fellowship examined how advanced knitting technologies can create adaptable, durable, and expressive textiles for furniture and interiors. The research considers fibre selection, structure, scale, finishing, and commercial viability, with a focus on translating global knowledge into local practice. It aims to strengthen Australian textile innovation, support local manufacturing, and expand the possibilities of knit as a meaningful upholstery material.
