Synopsis
In this report, International VET Practitioner Fellow, Candace Van Der Krogt, investigates the future of upholstery in Australia, focusing on preserving traditional craft skills and equipping the industry for a more sustainable, circular future. Candace undertook international study in England, completing immersive training with leading master upholsterers and engaging with specialist training institutions. Her Fellowship report explores traditional upholstery techniques, vocational education and training (VET) pathways, sustainable materials, and international best-practice teaching methods. Drawing on these insights, Candace examines how strengthening craft-based training and integrating environmentally responsible materials can address skills shortages and reduce the industry’s environmental impact. Through this Fellowship, Candace hopes her research will support a future where traditional craftsmanship, high-quality training and sustainability combine to revitalise Australia’s upholstery industry.
